BRICS Solution Awards

Development of a Digital Product Using Augmented and Mixed Reality Technologies in Cultural and Educational Tourism

Problem and implemented solution

The 5th Industrial Revolution has given companies the opportunity to increase the accessibility of advanced technologies and develop new ones, allowing for an unprecedented level of immersion. Currently, such technologies are predominantly used in the entertainment industry—VR clubs, cinemas, and the vast majority of programs developed in the VR industry are gaming projects. The project answers the question, "What if we use such revolutionary technologies in the field of educational tourism?" The project is implemented in stages. First, historical events are reconstructed by combining virtual objects with the physical world in real-time. The product is a mobile application as well as mixed reality glasses, created using modern photogrammetry technologies, a game engine, and augmented reality application development tools. The scanned area first undergoes retopology and is then placed into the game engine, where a virtual object behavior model is built. Next, the development environment for creating augmented reality is integrated into the engine, where the positioning and calibration of virtual objects are configured. After that, the project is compiled onto a device, where testing and demonstration of the resulting product are conducted in the real area. Applied tasks the project aims to solve: - Increasing the tourist attractiveness of the sites; - Enhancing youth interest in the history and culture; - Creating a new form of leisure.
