Immersive Theater and Museum on Shuanglong Street, Kaifeng

Problem and implemented solution

The immersive theater and museum project involves the reconstruction of an existing building. In order not to destroy it, we treat the existing building with the utmost care, thus, the reconstruction of the space is realized through the creation of a new volume - a block of vertical communications, which closes the old building and creates the highest point of the street, the observation deck of the city. This volume has a communication function, it is an interactive museum, media panels can change the appearance of the building depending on the performance, exhibition, event, time of year, they create a street theater that attracts the attention of citizens. In the new volume there are elevators, a ramp to move from floor to floor, and an evacuation staircase. The outer shell of the volume is made of traditional Chinese ceramics of gray color with perforated masonry, which resembles the skin of a dragon. The monolithic reinforced concrete frame resembles a field for playing Chinese checkers, especially noticeable at night. The second dragon of the concept - the winding red ramp - is also found here.

Description of competitive advantages

Instead of taking a decorative approach in reconstructing the facade of the existing 4-storey knowledge, we “close” it with an additional volume, without radically rebuilding it, but only filling it with a new function, inviting visitors to rise above the ancient city up to the observation deck. The new function is an interactive museum of the city of Kaifeng. The visit begins with a ride up from the underground level by elevator to the rooftop observation deck, and then visitors are guided through the exhibitions in the building. The top three floors feature media installations, temporary exhibitions, and an immersive museum in enfilade rooms. Each room is one historical event, and only when the performance is over does the next room open, the principle is similar to a quest where the visitor must interact with the environment. This complex scenario makes you feel part of a great history, experiencing it with all your senses: tactile, aural, visual, smell or taste. On the first floor there are staff offices, souvenir and bookstores.
