Help at Home

Problem and implemented solution

Children with craniosynostosis in Russia are treated mainly in large federal centers. This is explained by the rarity of the disease: in our region we detect 5-7 cases a year. We started to treat such children at home, at Lipetsk via special helmets, cranial orthosis.

Description of competitive advantages

The story we want to tell began almost 10 years ago. At that time, together with my colleague Vasin Ruslan Alikovich, we started to develop an idea that today is called “Help at Home”. Children with craniosynostosis in Russia are treated mainly in large federal centers. This is explained by the rarity of the disease: in our region we detect 5-7 cases a year. We wanted to treat such children at home. Treatment implies the use of helmet therapy in the postoperative period. Such helmets are not produced in our region. At the beginning of our journey we tried to make them by hand, but this required a lot of time and effort and did not give the necessary quality of the product. So we were looking for a solution that could help us avoid these problems. And we turned to the company “3d-Concept”, offered them to participate in the project and began to develop the design, algorithm and technology of production of cranial orthoses. At first parents bought these orthoses, but we decided to turn to charity funds, one of the first to respond was the Lipetsk Motorcycle Club: they organized a charity exhibition “Motorcyclists to Children” and part of the funds were used to purchase orthoses. Then the Positive Thinking Laboratory Foundation helped us. We went further and started using 3D printing to produce fragments of giant and complex skull defects to use them in preoperative planning, thus reducing the risks and time of surgical intervention. Today we have all the conditions to help children with skull malformations and children with post-traumatic skull defects. And we help - at home!
