Tiger identification system

Problem and implemented solution

Amur tiger is the northernmost and the largest tiger subspecies in the world. Specialists perform the monitoring of its habitat and population by foot and using trail cameras. More than 24 million photos of tigers are made annually in tiger habitat in Russia and it takes from six to nine months for preservation specialists to process them. This leads to outdated information and various cases of late help (for example, for ill animal), uninformed animal attacks or late understanding of ecosystem changes. Tiger identification system aims to provide more information on tiger species, its population, habitat and behavior, increase the speed and accuracy of the species monitoring, accelerate the response from preservation specialists and, so, help to preserve the tigers. And AI is the main enabler. Based on photos from photo traps located in the tiger habitat the AI-based system allows to detect a tiger and identify specific tiger based on its unique stripes pattern as well as to provide necessary analytics. As a result, preservation specialists can receive prompt information in a few days. The project was initiated by the Amur Tiger Center, the leading tiger preservation organization in Russia, and is being implemented jointly with Sber and the Far Eastern Artificial Intelligence Center of the FEFU.

Description of competitive advantages

1) First complex analytics tool for tiger preservation in Russia – The tiger identification system will allow to monitor and preserve more than 750 tigers in Russia, including more than 150 tiger cubs. The functionality covers tiger detection and identification, tiger and photo traps databases, analytics module. The system will also allow to provide prompt information on the predator’s movements in order to help a suffering animal or notify local communities. 2) Replicability for tiger preservation in BRICS+ countries – The tiger identification system can support multiple other languages, which means it can easily be used to preserve tigers in other countries and regions. 3) Replicability for other animal species preservation – The AI-based system can be replicated to preserve other animal species. This unique advantage of the system makes it single crucial world-wide preservation system for all countries and regions.
