Energy storage based on hydrogen cycle
The expansion of renewable energy sources increases the demand for energy storage systems due to the variability of energy production using renewable energy sources. A number of technologies are used for short-term (daily) energy storage, such as pumped storage, gravity accumulators, accumulators and flow batteries, etc. However, long-term storage of large amounts of energy is still a challenge. The use of energy storage systems with a hydrogen cycle can be one of the solutions to this problem. Energy from renewable energy sources is converted into hydrogen by electrolysis, hydrogen is stored in a special storage facility (compressed, liquefied or in metal hydrides) and, if necessary, converted into electricity in fuel cells.
New Industry And Energy
Hydrogen energy
The main components of the system have been manufactured and debugged, including in joint operation modes, which took about 5 years of work. To increase the usability, ease of use and level of automation, additional 1-1.5 years of development are required.
The developed solutions are currently being applied in Russia with the possibility of expansion to the BRICS countries.
Currently, there is a growing interest in renewable energy sources and backup power supply systems for long-term storage of electrical energy due to the expansion of cellular networks in hard-to-reach regions, an increase in the number and energy consumption of security systems, both domestic and industrial, and other tasks. The use of batteries for long-term backup of electrical energy is not always possible, due to a significant increase in the mass of the entire system with an increase in the backup time. In addition, to ensure the normal functioning of the backup power source, the batteries must be kept constantly charged, which significantly reduces their service life, and a serious drawback is the relatively high self-discharge of the batteries. All this requires the development of a new type of backup power supply systems. Some of the most promising systems are systems based on the hydrogen cycle with fuel cells as the main source of electricity. Their advantages are: very low energy losses during storage, almost complete absence of degradation of the current source with proper storage of the backup power system, high efficiency of the system. In addition, the use of the hydrogen cycle makes it possible to create fully autonomous backup power systems, systems with a fully closed operating cycle, and to effectively combine them with renewable energy sources.
