The Digital Twin of Moscow

Problem and implemented solution

The Digital Twin of Moscow is an exact 3D copy (photogrammetric model) of the capital city of Russia, displaying all buildings and facilities, engineering and transport communications networks. The platform helps the city authorities to plan the construction of residential, industrial and social infrastructure, make administrative decisions and monitor the progress of socially significant city projects. Today, it is the Digital Twin that has become a key decision-making tool for construction and development planning of Moscow. The platform's principal function is to integrate a BIM model of a future construction, road or any other object in the city plan. During construction planning, it allows the city authorities to assess how a new building will fit into the city architecture and how it will impact the infrastructure, as well as to plan transport accessibility. Thus, the Digital Twin helps to make rational urban planning decisions and select the best locations for construction sites, taking into account not only the current situation, but also the future development of the city. In 2023, our developers created a new sub system of the Digital Twin of the city – ‘MetaMoscow’ that features more realistic graphics and interaction with objects in virtual space. It uses more metaverse-like technologies. In this way, the platform can be used not only to solve administrative tasks more efficiently, but also to develop services for the city's residents and guests.

Description of competitive advantages

The Digital Twin of Moscow is the only one in Russia and one of a few similar projects in the world in terms of detail and number of available functions. The photogrammetric model, that is the basis of the project, was created entirely by the city resources, without using third-party images or mapservices. To keep the photogrammetric model up to date, the entire territory of Moscow is photographed annualy from different viewpoints - a total of more than 12 million photos, which are then used to create a 3D copy of the city by means of specialized software. The Digital Twin allows the Moscow authorities to obtain all the visual information they need about the city in a 3D format to make administrative decisions on city land and construction planning, within the legal restrictions. The project also features street view panoramas (including archive images), models of buildings and facilities, and an option to apply various data layers. It helps to consider the maximum number of planning parameters and to evaluate all options. One of the advantages of the Moscow Digital Twin is that it is based on the standards of the Open Geospatial Consortium, which makes it possible to harmonize it with software in Russia and worldwide. The new MetaMoscow subsystem is also designed to create realistic digital copies of the city's landmark sites and use them to create services. In 2024, the Moscow Digital Twin was used as a basis to develop a meta-universe of the Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy (VDNKh). It gives users the opportunity to take a virtual walk around the territory of VDNKh and to even go on a unique excursion developed especially for this project.
