Project on Environmentally Friendly СО2-neutral industrial pyrolysis of hydrocarbon gas via Hydrogen and Carbon Nanotubes Production
The proposed technology (pyrolysis) is an environmentally friendly method of utilization of associated petroleum gas (APG), instead of traditional flaring, with associated production of an alternative energy source - CO2-neutral hydrogen, as well as obtaining valuable products from associated hydrocarbon raw materials, such as carbon nano-tubes. Project implementation leads not only to reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as a result of flaring prevention, but also increases the degree of useful utilization of APG, which will allow oil and gas production companies to comply with a number of international initiatives, such as the World Bank's initiative “Zero Routine Flaring of Associated Petroleum Gas by 2030”, as well as also enforcet local legislation in terms of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and maximizing the use of associated petroleum gas. This technology In addition to reducing GHG emissions, the project will provide commercial by-products, such as: alternative fuel: hydrogen,as well as carbon nano-tubes, which are raw materials for various industries, such as polymer production. Carbon nano-tubes are used to produce various types of plastics, tires, paints, lithium-ion batteries, composite materials, graphite electrodes, and others.
Climate And Environmental Technologies
Climate change control technologies
Completion of R&D, creation of a pilot plant for hydrocarbon gas pyrolysis. In the course of the project implementation it was managed to achieve a 90% degree of hydrocarbon gas decomposition and ensure the yield and separation of alternative energy source (hydrogen) and carbon co-product. The pilot plant makes it possible to process 1 million m3 of gas per year, preventing its flaring.
This technology can be further scaled up or replicated to all oil and gas producing enterprises of the Russian Federation and worldwide.
The technology will make it possible to produce CO2-neutral hydrogen (an alternative environmentally friendly fuel), carbon black and carbon nanofibers, as well as make a significant contribution to solving such environmental problems as reducing pollutant emissions into the atmosphere, increasing the degree of beneficial use of associated petroleum gas, and preventing greenhouse gas emissions during the processing of associated and natural petroleum gases. Utilization of natural gas (NG) or associated petroleum gas (APG) will allow to extinguish flares at production facilities of oil and gas producing companies and reduce the tax burden due to greenhouse gas emissions. The combined pyrolysis scheme is being implemented for the first time as a pilot complex at an oil and gas production facility. The uniqueness of the technology lies in the use of specially developed pyrolysis furnaces and an energy-efficient heat recovery process. Organization of optimal mass-heat exchange in the working zone of pyrolysis furnaces of special design and application of heat-resistant materials ensure the efficiency of pyrolytic decomposition of hydrocarbon gases.
