China consumes 680 million pigs annually, making it the world's largest producer and consumer of pork. However, China's core breeding pig population only includes 150,000 pigs, which can meet just 20% of the 680 million commercial pigs' production capacity. As a result, China’s pig industry is characterized by ""large scale but low efficiency,"" with key indicators such as litter size and feed conversion rate lagging behind those of foreign countries. To maximize profits, more than 80% of breeding companies in China import breeding stock from abroad, with sources controlled by foreign quotas, leading to an industrial outflow of up to 96 billion yuan. This method significantly improves traits that are challenging to enhance through conventional breeding, reduces generational intervals, and minimizes inbreeding while maintaining genetic progress.
